Have you checked the ownership and permissions on the CD drive? You
should see something like:

root@hawk:~# ll /dev/sr0
brw-rw----+ 1 root cdrom 11, 0 Sep 30 13:47 /dev/sr0
root@hawk:~#

tmb@hppavilion:~$ ls -l /dev/sr0
brw-rw----+ 1 root cdrom 11, 0 Oct  1 20:15 /dev/sr0
