IBM had a lock on the business market at the time: no accountant would
have chosen a Sun workstation over an entry-level IBM system (remember
"No one ever got fired for buying IBM"?).  He might very well have
purchased a 68000-based IBM pc over an entry-level IBM system,
though. This would have cost IBM's entry level business systems division
several thousand dollars.  Thus the (original) pc had to be crippled to
prevent internal competition and preserve market segmentation.

A very bad move, in the end.
