I am not at all knowledgeable on theses subjects.

From a quick research, it seems that SMR technology is already not-so-new, and can be found among others technologies on the market. Some workarounds seem to still be developed (search SMR on github) and Seagate indicates it is developing a solution for the ext4 filesystem:

The underlying technology used by manufacturers of HDD is not always known but Seagate has a list about its different lines of products:
