I believe so, yes.

IIRC that's what I did back then, yes.
This said, I don't know that a memory upgrade on your machine requires
a firmware upgrade. For my old(er) Mac mini, a firmware upgrade was
needed to bump the max RAM limit, but I don't know whether that's
a frequent or a rare need.
