For lightdm it should be rather
<https://bugs.debian.org/1087713>
"lightdm reports warnings on utmpx missing"
It seems, it is really just a warning:
<https://sources.debian.org/src/lightdm/1.32.0-6/src/session-child.c?hl=716#L716>
Since no apparent errors are logged to journald, I would try to login as
charles from LightDM, then login as root from a VT and inspect
~charles/.xsession-errors and /var/log/Xorg.0.old (/var/log/Xorg.0
likely will be for the greater session started after end of charles'
session).
Is there anything suspicious on /var/log/lightdm?
You may try to create a new user and try to login to test whether it may
be related to user configuration.
