The bottom-line is to back up.
I tend to disagree.
The bottom line is to know how to restore, and that requires knowing
what you need to be able to restore.
Obviously, "having a backup" is an important element of the list, but
definitely not the only one.
Bonus points if you have an idea of how long that takes up front --
something where the matrix team probably found some surprises. No fun in
their position, and kudos to anybody who's doing that for an essentially
free service, but I think it's a bit painful for them right now.
To get this on topic for Debian --
apt-cache search --names-only backup
shows a nice list of options already, and there are many more available.
For larger environments with centralized, secured backup infrastructure
I recommend Bacula. I am biased.
But if you have any valuable data, you should know at least one of them
reasonably well.
Cheers,
Arno
