Tom,

Bring up a terminal screen.  Type your password at the prompt.  If you
mistype, use backspace, or just start again by executing control-x to
get a fresh prompt.

Once the proper password is displayed, copy with a swipe of the mouse.

Then get a new terminal prompt and paste, just double-check.

Then go to the screen which needs the password and paste with the
mouse.

I do this all the time.

P.S.  Life is too short to mess around with vi.
