In the file that had 'export MAILCHECK=0', I replaced it with
unset MAILCHECK
export MAILCHECK
then ran 'unset MAILCHECK' on every open tty.
BTW, MAILCHECK="" sets it at 0.
shoptmailwarn was already off.

Someone else suggested /etc/aliases which in my case has sent
everything to root then root to mike for over 20+ years and there is
no system mail being generated at that time.

If 'unset MAILCHECK' doesn't do the trick I'll try to remember to
check ps output.
