Tar (I guess it's GNU's flavour of tar) is pretty well documented.
It has a man page ("man tar"), an info page (if you have installed
that), *and* if you prefer to read that with the Web browser (YUCK!
Young'uns!), then here <https://www.gnu.org/software/tar/manual/>,
first hit with "gnu tar documentation" in a search engine.
The embarrasment of riches!
Note that the compression layer is *outside* the archive layer, which
explains some properties of those formats (different to zip).
