Maybe do not give advice tailored for somebody who is in charge of
dozens computers, with plenty of spare disks at hand, to somebody who
apparently is just an individual who wants to upgrade their computer
cleanly but without too much work?

I think the principle (expect and prepare for computer disasters) applies at any scale (including one computer), but the tools and techniques change. I started with two computers and tar(1), gzip(1), and rsync(1). As my knowledge, skills, and needs grew, I added more tools and starting writing scripts. TIMTOWTDI.
