Doesn't really work any more. Domestic Windows is practically free to
computer builders, MS only really charges for professional and server
versions. I doubt that most vendors can actually get hold of
Windows-free machines.

MS or the manufacturer gets paid for all the rubbishware they put on the
computer, and certainly MS monetises the various data it collects from
Win10 and Win11. Telemetry, sure. Games and other stuff that used to be
thrown in are now third-party and require payment, and you can be
certain MS takes a slice.

These days the software is more or less free to domestic users, and the
profit comes from advertising and selling data. Last time I started up
a new Windows, there were various 'privacy' options. One assured me
that if I chose not to get targeted advertisements, I'd still get
untargeted ones. I'm glad none of my other tools come with compulsory
advertising.
