There is also the "Protected" field.  It acts like "Essential" when
trying to remove, but not required like "Essential" is.

Since other folks mentioned site wide configuration management, I have
taken to using basic metapackages to keep my machines happy.  And
those have "Protected: yes" set in the top level packages
(mrc-${HOSTNAME}.deb).
