Knuth's "The TeXbook" is 483 pages. Books about LaTeX, such as "A Guide to LaTeX" by Kopka & Daly, are generally about 600 pages. I've never had trouble moving LaTeX files from one plain-text editor to another, the only caveat being to be careful about the difference between Linux and Microsoft end-of-line.
