I am in doubts if you have real reasons to do so. It may mean seeking some trouble.

Trixie(Debian 13) will be the next major version.
It is still in testing and not yet in full freeze.

You may have testing or unstable as a virtual machine. Of course, it means using a search engine rather actively and perhaps some failures before you will manage to setup it.

but I had problem attempting to install pdftk. It is unclear if it was release level related a local hardware/software issue.

I admit, some Debian mirror might be improperly configured, but I assume, it is more plausible that you forgot to run "apt update". And see beginning of this message.

There are enough tools besides pdftk that may extract specific pages. Some of them have been mentioned in your thread.
