FWIW, I've been using the following "pdf-concat" script for years:

    % cat =pdf-concat 
    #!/bin/sh
     
    gs -q -sPAPERSIZE=letter -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -sDEVICE=pdfwrite \
       -sOutputFile=- "$@"
    %
