I googled "linux how to determine which desktop environment is being used"
and it gave me several answers. In no particular order,
env | grep XDG
inxi
screenfetch
env | grep SESSION
ps -A | egrep -i "gnome|kde|mate|cinnamon|lxde|xfce|jwm"
wmctrl -m
And a whole lot more, many of which look specialized or obscure.
