which, to save your time, though it lengthens the thread,
I'll quote here:

it may provide a clue as to why I only have to type:
/↑ Return
to switch to root. If /↑ doesn't yield the line /bin/su --login,
then holding down the ↑ key certainly will. IOW, that line is
the only line starting with / in the bash_history file.
