I figured it out.  The page uses javascript.  I had javascript enabled in
Firefox.  When I disabled javascript it moved me to a different homepage
which doesn't use javascript.
The URL changed to https://html.duckduckgo.com/html

When I re-enabled javascript and updated the page it stayed on the html
URL and didn't get any of the javascript features back.  I had to delete
the two instances of 'html' in the URL and then it went back to the
javascript page.

I agree with you about not doing financial stuff on a phone, but I do
sometimes do web browsing on the phone.  I prefer not to because the
screen size is too limiting.  I did it that particular time because I had
recommended Duckduckgo as a browser for Android even though it is a
bit off topic..

As to why the magnifying glass changes colour I didn't figure that out.
It did it for me too, and didn't seem to have anything to javascript.
