AIUI roundcube is a php webpage on an http server which interfaces with eg. dovecot IMAP server and sends the right queries to be able to display, sort, move the messages/directories. Sending and receiving mail is done by something else. I never tried to see if roundcube can interface directly with IMAP server on another network.
