I don't use synaptic. I just apt away in an xterm. I installed the LXDE
desktop after upgrading this old machine (I put in a Radeon graphics card,
upgraded to 8 mg of RAM, and installed an ethernet controller).
It's all working pretty well.

My philosophy is: when in doubt, do nothing. So I think I'll do nothing as
Michael Stone suggests below.
