Have you read logs from the previous boot ("journalctl -b -1" as root)? Are you sure that Debian was not running? I would arrange port forwarding and would try to connect to VM using ssh to confirm that it is not a GUI issue.All I can do is to fouce power-off and re-start it, just to found all running tasks gone.
I have no idea if some stuff like virtualbox guest additions might be involved.
