Stopped it. opened an xfce4 terminal and typed "thunderbird"enter, same old
same old, two gui's stacked on top of each other.

This, at least, rules out the mouse.

That for a change actually makes me feel better. I seem to be the only one with much of this. I /think/ this started with the last tbird update, but I don't have a bible to swear on.
