Sorry, I don't have a solution, but this happened to me a year or two
ago. As usual, I didn't keep a record, so I can't remember if it went
away on its own or I did something. It certainly started suddenly, not
from installation.

Is it possible you have a link in the opening panes to somewhere which
no longer exists or isn't mounted? That sort of vaguely rings a bell.

You can open mc with particular panes open by passing the two directory
paths. If you do this with a different directory (or two) than either
of the two defaults (I'm assuming you use two panes) does the same delay
happen?
