Greetings,There are drivers for more Brother laser printers in the package printer-driver-brlaser .
One doesn't have to put up with Brother's atrocious install script to set up the DCP-1610W. The driver package from the Debian repository doesn't produce the extraneous squiggles and blobs either. Not so far.
