The 470 driver that the Debian installer chose doesn't work with GF108. Only the 390 driver works. If you look at one of the alternative text screens (not X) the load process is complaining about that -- but it took me a week to find that.

There is a package nvidia-detect

it tells you which driver is appropriate for your NVidia's video card.
