Because the second echo in the first line does not have a -n.

All the ssh stuff is superfluous.

charles@jhegaala:~$ test=$(echo -n '') ; echo $test

charles@jhegaala:~$ test=$(echo -n '') ; echo -n $test
charles@jhegaala:~$
