When was this discovery first made, Debian 11, or some older release? If older
release, which? Or give an estimated year if you don't remember that far back.

Probably a consequence of being stuck in a fallback graphics mode.

Was this determination made years ago, or only just now with Debian 11? Some
installation options are only appropriate for the installer, and need to be
removed from Grub post-installation. This sounds like one that should be removed.

I'm not aware of any gain to be had by using a pae kernel with less than 3GB RAM.
