Exactly, that's why you need to check.
$ zgrep -A1 'install.*synaptic' /var/log/apt/history*
should tell you which packages were installed automatically
when you installed synaptic.
(I /think/ the history files are world-readable, but if they
aren't, you'll have to either run the command as root, or add
yourself to the adm group.)
