This might be one of those cases where a fresh install using the unofficial
non-free media which includes firmware would be useful. The firmware
detection is much improved.

I suspect this might also be a case where you just have to have the Nvidia
proprietary drivers for that particular model of card. I did have this on
a laptop at one time which would not play nicely with nouveau.

If you do end up having to install the Nvidia proprietary drivers: I've found
it useful in the past to do a minimal text only install - no gui, no 
graphics. Then install build essential and whatever the prerequisites are for
the Nvidia driver. Build the appropriate driver and only after that use
tasksel (as root/root equivalent) to install a desktop environment. Only
by ensuring there are no nouveau libraries will this work in my experience.
