I used xv, a long time ago. Take a look at "feh". It's got decent command line functionality, and is modern/supported. E.g., to show a picture zoomed for the full screen:
feh -FZ filename add filename to output: feh -FZd filename add exif tags: feh -FZd --draw-exif filename etc
