Thinkpads are generally very good quality (even if expensive) and have 
traditionally been rather well supported by Linux.

Recently Lenovo has actively cooperated with distributions (including 
Debian, see debian-devel archives) to improve support out-of-the box for 
new devices and I believe some are available with Ubuntu (in addition to 
the ones available without Windows).
