Looks for me, that it is a driver problem. The system has got no correct 
driver and is trying to use framebuffer.

Do you have the correct xserver packages installed for your graphics card? 
Vesa should always work but better are drivers aimed for the graphics chipset.

For testing purposes you can try to use a minimalistic xorg.conf to force the 
load of the correct driver. However, xorg.conf is no more needed since several 
years, as the drivers find theire settings themselve today.

Personally I am still using a xorg.conf, because I like to control things by 
myself.

Ah, and of course, with "drivers" I meant module or whatever you will name it.
