./configure failure, can't find glib on debian-arm buster 10.1

This seems to indicate a pkg-config problem:

checking for glib... configure: error: no -- required until somebody 
makes glib optional

glib-2 is of course installed but pkg-config apparentlly knows nothing 
about it.

Fix?
