Problems with Buster and Bluetooth

Hello,

I have a set of Bluetooth earbuds and a USB Bluetooth adapter (Plugable USB-BT4LE).  With minimal effort, I had everything working fine under Jessie for several months.  But I just got a new PC and installed Buster on it, and now I struggle just to get the earbuds paired and connected, and when they do connect, it's not long before they randomly disconnect again.  And when they are connected, the left and right channels are reversed (per the speaker test in Gnome Settings > Sound > Output > Test Speakers).

I have tried just about everything I can find in my Google searches.  Nothing seems to work.  When the earbuds fail to connect after pairing, syslog shows the following:

Sep 20 15:11:59 debian bluetoothd[654]: connect error: Software caused connection abort (103)

And when they disconnect after some random interval:

Sep 20 15:23:48 debian bluetoothd[654]: Start: Connection timed out (110)
Sep 20 15:23:48 debian pulseaudio[1381]: E: [pulseaudio] bluez5-util.c: Transport Acquire() failed for transport /org/bluez/hci0/dev_9B_1F_48_B8_55_F6/fd1 (Input/output error)
Sep 20 15:23:50 debian bluetoothd[654]: Abort: Connection timed out (110)

What's most frustrating about all of this is that I was able to get them paired, connected, and used as the default output with very little hassle under Debian 9.  I'm not sure what's changed in 10, but I've been trying to get this working for days and I'm out of ideas.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Dave
