this behaviour had been discussed here, I think:

In that thread and others on that forum there are a couple of links to
other threads etc. about this issue.
The proposed solution is a patch which originated here:
https://bugs.devuan.org//cgi/bugreport.cgi?bug=237
…which I have applied on my system (devuan/ascii) and never seen this
problem again.
