Right, I'm not referring to running Debian on 32-bit machines. I'm
referring to being able to:

# dpkg --add-architecture i386

in an amd64 machine, and

# apt install <software>:i386

in an amd64 environment, in order to maintain i386 compatibility in an
amd64 environment.

For now it seems that Debian will be just fine for this purpose.
