I use KDE. That may be part of the problem.

I can trigger OOM with only with a browser (Firefox or Chromium) open
because it leaks memory on certain websites. Of course, I can trigger
it more quickly with other programs like LibreOffice running. I can
avoid some of those websites, but I'd rather have my computer not lock
up. I have more than enough RAM to run a modern operating system.

So, with this information, how do I get OOM or some other
anti-resource-hogging system working on Linux so my computer doesn't
lock up? Did my kern.log provide any useful information? The stuff I
posted at https://paste.debian.net/1028268/ is all that got logged
during the lock up.
