Thanks very much for detailing the steps involved in getting this patch into a stable Debian 9 release. It looks like I have to do a bunch of testing before I file a bug to get this change into a stable Debian 9 release or even a backport.

Yes, backports is alwasy easier.  But it reaches a lot less people.
Your choice, really.
