I take your DNS server is 8.8.8.8 (kids, do we have to hand off every
bit of our lives to The Goog? But I disgress).

My top two would be that either 8.8.8.8 is down (hee, hee ;-) or that
your Internet connection is down. I'd guess number two is the case.

So I'd guess that it's not only your DNS resolution failing.

Whenever your DNS fails try a "traceroute 8.8.8.8". Compare its results
to what you get when you do it at times where your DNS works. Perhaps
this sheds some light on it.
