Yes, it helps to sample the number of "bytes" like so:

owl1=$(awk '/usb0/ {print $2}' /proc/net/dev)

# insert process to be measured

bytes=$(awk "/usb0/ {print (\$2 - $owl1)}" /proc/net/dev)
