To control that meta key feature in XTerm add the following line in your
~/.Xresources file:

    XTerm*metaSendsEscape: true

then you must either restart your X session or type "xrdb -merge
~/.Xresources". In XTerm you can also toggle that feature by pressing
Ctrl and left mouse button and select "Meta Sends Escape".
