For the record, I fixed this problem by adding "elevator=deadline" to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in /etc/default/grub.

It seems to be necessary for some old SSD. Without you cannot copy to
HDD. It tooks me almost a year to figure out this...
