A quick skimming of the web suggests that the Elmer FEM
developers aren't actually interested in keeping their
documentation up to date. At all.

If you really want to use this software rather than fiddle
with compiling it, you might want to download their virtual
machine image and just run that. 

Not very satisfying, I know.
