I'd just remove the mutexes on SG_IO. I'm using multiple drives via
/dev/sg* since more than a year. sg never had the Big Kernel Lock which
was replaced by a heavy handed mutex in 2010 during a drive-by programming
effort.

Meanwhile at least blkid became fixed to work around the kernel insufficiency.
