Debian Stretch: Problems with installation - computer froze

First attempt

I downloaded debian-9.0.0-amd64-netinst.iso and installed it onto my machine.

Installation was successful and my machine rebooted into tty1, the console.

After typing the command

sudo apt-get install xorg gnome-core gnome-tweak-tool synaptic gedit gdebi file-roller dnsutils resolvconf openvpn

my machine fetched the required packages from a Debian mirror.

Everything went smoothly until the setup procedure reached the following:

Setting rtkit (0.11-4+b1).....
Created symlink /etc/systemd/system/graphical.target.wants/rtkit-daemon.service -> /lib/systemd/system/rtkit-daemon.service
Job for rtkit-daemon.service failed because a timeout was exceeded
rtkit-daemon.service couldn't start
See "systemctl status rtkit-daemon.service" and "journalctl-xe" for details
Setting up dbus (1.10.18-1).....

And my machine froze for more than an hour....

I had to perform a cold shutdown by pulling the power cord from my machine.

Second attempt

Next I downloaded debian-9.0.0-amd64-DVD-1.iso and performed a minimal install.

After installing the OS successfully, my machine rebooted into the console, tty1.

I typed the command

sudo apt-get install xorg gnome-core gnome-tweak-tool synaptic gedit gdebi file-roller dnsutils resolvconf openvpn

My machine froze at the steps as described earlier.

Third attempt

I installed the OS for the third time using debian-9.0.0-amd64-netinst.iso

After my machine rebooted into the console, tty1

I issued the command

sudo apt-get install xorg

I waited for the installation of the package "xorg" to complete. I installed the rest of the packages individually.

This time round my machine did not freeze/hang.

However, the following error message appeared:

Creating config file /etc/gdm3/greeter.dconf-defaults with new version
gdm.service is not active, cannot reload
invoke-rc.d: initscript gdm3, action "reload" failed

Should I feedback the above bizarre behavior to Debian? If yes, which team?

Regards.

Alan
