DennisCheck the files in /home/$USER are not owned by root. They should be owned by the user. If any hidden files are owned by root, the GUI login loops.
I did run across this once as well. The partition that /var is on is a prime suspect:-)Also check if any partition is full. Running out of space can cause this.
