Re: framebuffer geometry changed between kernel 4.5.0-1 and 4.5.0-2

Daniel A composed on 2016-06-20 04:44 (UTC+0200):
...
]$ fbset -i
mode "1920x1200"
...
Since kernel 4.5.0-2 it changed to this:
...
]$ fbset -i
mode "1024x768"
...
-Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 240x75
+Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 128x48

Is there any way to fix it?

A "proper" fix might require an update to kernel-firmware or some recent bug in the kernel fixed. With 4.5.0-2 and HD5450 on Stretch, I'm getting my display's native 1680x1050, unless I override it, which normally I do, which makes me suspect yours is less likely a kernel bug than something else.

Regardless of the above, you can have any mode the kernel supports via a kernel cmdline parameter: "video=". If your display is fairly typical, in addition to kernel support for 1920x1080 you might find a mode in between it and 1024x768 more pleasurable, such as 1280x720, 1360x768 and/or 1600x900. I most often use video=1440x900@60.

With some gfxchips (mainly Intel AFAIR), whatever video= mode is included on the kernel cmdline gets inherited by Xorg. When that happens, and that mode is not the display's EDID native mode, the desired Xorg mode needs to be specified via a startup xrandr command, or via /etc/X11/xorg.conf*.
