Thanks. Yes, I'm behind on kernel upgrades (bugfixes but not updates). I'll try that.

PS/2 middle button / scrollwheel swap also seems possible, though behavior isn't suggesting this.

I'm somewhat suspicious it's the kernel. From uname:

Maybe that is the problem. That looks like a Jessie kernel. Testing/Stretch
is on what now, 4.5, or has it updated to 4.6 since I last upgraded?

AFAICT, libinput* isn't limited to Xorg, so likely is used by gpm. My Jessie
is on libinput5, while my Stretch is on libinput10. Could be an unexpected
combination of kernel and libinput* doesn't work so well.
