Are there any browsers in Debian Jessie that are not dependent on

It seems everything has been replaced or is just a cover/skin/re-paint
of firefox.

There are many. Among them are midori, epiphany-browser, dillo, netsurf
(mostly for text only). I do have all of these and more installed.

The most radically different text browser I've used and it's available in debian was edbrowse. If you're afraid of the command line stay well clear of edbrowse since if you don't you'll be in for massive culture shock.
