Not able to downgrade via synaptics, apparently because synaptic doesn't find the -3-18.9-1  package files, don't know why.

But I changed desktop environment to cinnamon, which behaves better. Now emacs have the standard toolbar icons, but

the ones from auctex does't show.  At least somewhat better!

I've filed a bug already (#822944) without remedy so far. It's due to changes in
gtk-3. That's also the reason why the firefox package got back to link against gtk2.
I downgraded gtk-3 to 3.18 on my system.
